“You told me she would take Chloe away.”
Silence.
“You told me I needed to protect my family.”
His voice cracked.
“But you were the one destroying it.”
Eleanor looked at him.
“I did everything for you.”
“No.”
Ethan wiped his face.
“You did everything for yourself.”
The officers took Eleanor away.
And for the first time in months…
The hospital hallway felt quiet.
Later that night, Ethan and I sat outside Chloe’s room.
Neither of us spoke.
Finally, he whispered:
“I don’t expect you to forgive me.”
I looked straight ahead.
“Good.”
He nodded.
“I was wrong.”
I laughed softly.
A painful laugh.
“Wrong?”
He looked down.
“I know that isn’t enough.”
“No, Ethan. It isn’t.”
He swallowed.
“I was manipulated.”
I turned toward him.
“But you believed her.”
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“You chose to believe your mother over your wife.”
“I know.”
“You let her make you think losing me was easier than fixing our marriage.”
“I know.”
“And you never once thought about what Chloe would feel?”
That broke him.
Tears filled his eyes.
“I did.”
I stared at him.
“Then why?”
He covered his face.
“Because I was weak.”
For the first time…
He wasn’t making excuses.
He was admitting the truth.
“I was angry. I was confused. My mother kept telling me that you were changing, that you were taking Chloe away from me.”
He looked at Chloe through the window.
“And instead of trusting the woman who had been beside me for years…”
His voice cracked.
“I trusted the person who had been controlling me my whole life.”
I didn’t know what to say.
Because part of me hated him.
But another part remembered the man he used to be.
And that was the hardest part.
The next morning, Officer Lawson returned.
He had more information.
“Eleanor has been charged.”
I nodded.
“And Ethan?”
The officer looked at him.
“Mr. Carter cooperated with the investigation.”
I looked at Ethan.
“But?”
Officer Lawson sighed.
“There is still evidence that he was involved in the planning.”
My heart sank.
“What happens now?”
“He will need to answer for his actions.”
Ethan nodded.
“I understand.”
Then Officer Lawson handed me a small envelope.
“This was found during the search of Eleanor’s house.”
I opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
The handwriting was Eleanor’s.
The first line made my blood run cold.
“If Natalie disappears, everything will finally return to the way it should be.”
I kept reading.
And with every sentence…
I discovered something even worse.
Eleanor hadn’t planned this alone.
She had help.
Someone else knew.
Someone else was involved.
At the bottom of the letter was one name.
A name I never expected to see.
My own sister.
Haley.
I looked up slowly.
Because suddenly…
The betrayal wasn’t just coming from my husband’s family.
It was coming from my own.
And I knew I wouldn’t stop until I uncovered every single lie.
Even if the truth destroyed everyone I loved.
