After my affair came to light— my husband never touched me again.

Part 2 — The Shadow on the Ultrasound

The image on the screen was gray and indistinct.

I could not understand what I was seeing.

Dr. Evans enlarged one section.

“There is a surgical clip near your left fallopian tube,” she said. “And scarring consistent with a procedure.”

I stared at her.

“I’ve never had surgery there.”

“Your medical records show no such procedure?”

“No.”

She reviewed the chart again.

“There is an abdominal hospitalization from 2008, but the record only says medication-related treatment.”

My hands went cold.

“The hospital where I woke up?”

“Yes.”

She looked at me carefully.

“Did anyone explain the treatment in detail?”

“Michael said my pain was from the stomach pumping.”

Dr. Evans did not respond immediately.

Then she said, “You need a specialist and a complete copy of your records. Do not confront anyone until you understand what happened.”

I left the office with an imaging disc and a referral.

At home, Michael was in the garage repairing a shelf.

He looked up.

“How was the examination?”

“Routine.”

His face remained neutral.

“Good.”

I went upstairs and searched through the filing cabinet.

The hospital discharge paperwork was incomplete.

There were pages missing.

The medication list included a sedative I had never remembered receiving.

The signature on the consent form was not mine.

It was Michael’s.

I sat at the kitchen table for more than an hour.

The affair had given Michael a reason to distrust me.

But it had not given him the right to make medical decisions without my knowledge.

I called Jake.

“Mom?” he said. “Are you all right?”

“I need to ask you something about 2008.”

He was silent.

“What do you remember?”

“Dad told me you were sick.”

“Did he ever say anything else?”

“No. Why?”

I looked at the signature on the form.

“I think your father kept something from me.”
