‘Groundhog Day’ and ‘Planet Earth’ composer George Fenton dies at 76

British composer George Fenton died on October 5, 2026, according to the announcement attributed to his website. Across more than five decades, he composed for over 100 films, including Groundhog Day, Dangerous Liaisons, and Gandhi, whose score he shared with Ravi Shankar. His work earned five Academy Award nominations, alongside BAFTA, Emmy, and Ivor Novello honors. In 2023, he was appointed CBE for services to music—a recognition of a career that helped shape how audiences experienced stories.

For viewers of David Attenborough’s documentaries, Fenton’s compositions brought another dimension to The Blue Planet, Planet Earth, and Frozen Planet. His music could make an ocean feel more mysterious or a fragile encounter more moving. The announcement named his wife Amanda, former wife Jane, three children, and six grandchildren among his survivors. Beyond those closest to him, his enduring legacy lives in melodies that listeners may recognize before they ever learn his name.
