Colorado Funeral Home Owners Admit Guilt After Improper Handling of Nearly 200 Bodies

A shocking betrayal of trust has rocked the funeral industry in Colorado. Jon and Carie Hallford, owners of the so-called “Return to Nature Funeral Home,” have pled guilty to 191 felony counts of corpse abuse, exposing a horrifying scheme that left grieving families devastated. Marketed as eco-friendly and sustainable, their operation promised biodegradable caskets and green burials—but behind the marketing, it was a web of fraud, neglect, and unimaginable emotional trauma.

The investigation began in 2023 when neighbors in Penrose reported a persistent, foul odor coming from the facility. Authorities and hazardous materials teams discovered nearly 200 decomposed bodies stored improperly—some for up to four years—while the Hallfords had redirected pre-paid funeral funds to finance luxury cars, cryptocurrency, and an extravagant lifestyle. Families who thought they had arranged cremations sometimes received urns filled with concrete instead of loved ones’ remains.

In El Paso County Court, the Hallfords accepted a plea deal that could bring sentences of 15–20 years. District Attorney Michael Allen emphasized the deep psychological damage caused by their actions, noting that the betrayal went beyond neglect to active deception. Civil lawsuits and class-action claims are now underway, aiming to reform Colorado’s funeral regulations and protect future families from similar horrors.
