For three months, every night when I sat next to my husband in bed, I could smell a strange, unpleasant odor…
And every time I tried to clean the bed, he always got angry.
When he went on a business trip, I cut open the mattress—and what I saw inside made my heart stop…

A few days ago, every time I lay down next to my husband, a strange smell emanated from him. An unpleasant odor so unbearable that I could barely sleep. I’ve changed the sheets seven times, washed the sheets and pillows, and even filled the entire room with essential oil and perfume… but that strange smell still won’t go away. Instead, it gets stronger every night.

Something sinister was slowly starting to weigh on my chest. Finally, when my husband left on a business trip, I decided to open the mattress to find out what was really going on.

And in that very instant… my knees buckled and I fell to the floor. Because what was inside the mattress wasn’t just terrifying—it also exposed a painful reality I’d long been afraid to face.

Miguel and I have been married for eight years. We live in a small house in Guadalajara, in the state of Jalisco, Mexico. Miguel is a sales manager at a company that distributes electronic devices, so he travels frequently to different cities such as Monterrey, Mexico City, and Puebla.

Our marriage wasn’t perfect, but we led a quiet and orderly life. Or… That’s what I thought at the time.

I change the sheets all the time. I wash the blanket in hot water. I even take the mattress out onto the balcony to dry it in the intense Manila sun.

But it’s strange — every night, when Michael goes to bed, the smell returns.

When I asked him, he frowned.

“You’re so sensitive,  Anna . There’s no smell.”

But I knew I wasn’t imagining it.

Things got even stranger when I noticed that every time I tried to clean part of his bed, he would suddenly become irritable. One night he even screamed.

“Don’t touch my things. Leave the bed like that!”

I was stunned.

Michael was always calm. In our eight years of marriage, I had never seen him get so angry just about cleaning.

From then on, a strange fear gradually developed inside me.

And then came the night when the smell became so strong I could barely sleep. Every time I lay down, I felt like something was rotting under the bed.

A very strong feeling of fear.

One night, Miguel said he had to go to  Cebu  for a three-day business trip.

He dragged his suitcase to the door and kissed me on the forehead.

“Make sure the door is locked.”

I nodded, but felt a strange sensation in my chest.

When the door closed and the sound of his footsteps in the hallway gradually faded away, the whole house became very quiet.

I stared at the door for a long time.

Then I slowly turned my gaze back to the bed in our bedroom.

Suddenly, my heart was beating faster.

An idea occurred to me — and at that moment I knew I could no longer ignore it.

“Something is wrong… I need to know the truth.”

I pulled the mattress to the center of the floor.

My hand was shaking as I held the cutter.

I took a deep breath.

And I made it through the first cut.

As soon as the mattress cover separated, a strong, unpleasant smell suddenly evaporated from my face.

I grabbed my nose and coughed hard.

My heart was beating strongly.

It can’t be… Why does it smell like that inside the mattress?

I cut it even bigger.

The foam slowly came out from inside.

And then…

It was as if my world had stopped.

There are no dead rats or rotten food inside the mattress.

But it’s a  large plastic bag tied  tightly, which is starting to mold on the outside.

I shuddered when I opened it…

My hand was trembling as I slowly opened the plastic.

A strong smell of mold and old paper evaporated.

I was running a little late.

But I was forced to move on.

I slowly took the contents out of the bag.

First I saw piles of money.

There’s a lot of money.

Thick bundles of weights , wrapped in elastic bands. Others are already damp and have mold stains.

I couldn’t believe it.

“Why… Why do I have so much money in my pocket?” he muttered to himself.

Then I saw some thick envelopes.

There are documents inside.

Mga receipt.

MGA Contract.

And a small notebook.

I opened it.

From the first page, I felt my whole body tense up.

There is a list of dates.

Values of money.

and company names.

It’s like a record of secret transactions.

Suddenly, my heart was beating strongly.

“My God… “What is Michael doing?”

But as I continued reading, I noticed something different.

At the end of each page there is a small mark.

It is a symbol.

It’s a  simple cross  .

I don’t understand.

When I opened the next envelope, I saw some photos.

Children’s photos.

Thin children, dressed in old clothes.

There are some photos of a small building.

It’s a school.

The back of the photo says:

“San Pedro Community School – Cebú.”

I frowned.

I’m getting more and more confused.

I opened another envelope after that.

Inside there was a letter.

The handwriting seems familiar to me.

Kay Miguel.

I took a deep breath.

And then I started to read.

“Ann,

If you’re reading this right now, it means you’ve discovered the secret I’ve been keeping for a long time.

I know you’re going to be angry.

Or you could get hurt.

But before you judge, read it to the end.

The money under the mattress does not come from crime.

Nor does it come from cheating.

It’s money  I’ve been saving for years .

For something I’ve been dreaming about for a long time.

You know how hard my life was when I was a child.

I grew up in a small town in Cebu.

Many of my childhood friends at that time did not make it to school.

It’s not that they don’t want to.

But because they don’t have money.

When I graduated from college and started earning money, I promised myself that one day I would build a school for underprivileged children.

I didn’t tell you because I was afraid.

I was afraid you’d think I was crazy.

Or maybe you’re going to stop me because it’s a large amount of money that you need.

So I kept it a secret.

I secretly traveled to Cebu to buy land.

And I secretly built a small school.

It is nearing its end.

The money hidden under the mattress was the final straw that kept the school open.

The smell you’re smelling comes from old documents and wet money that has been hidden for a long time.

I’m sorry if I get angry every time you clean the bed.

I was just afraid that you would see everything right away before I was ready to tell the truth.

I plan to tell you everything next month.

Today is our ninth wedding anniversary.

I want to go to school with you.

You are the first person I want to be a part of.

If you’re still angry after reading this, I understand.

But I hope that, despite everything, you know that I didn’t do it just for my dreams.

But it’s also for both families.

I love you so much.

Miguel.”

Finally I read that I didn’t realize I was crying.

I gripped the letter tightly.

I felt as if a huge stone had fallen from my chest.

For three months…

I thought he was hiding something bad.

I thought I had a different family.

I thought he was lying.

But the truth is…

I had a  secret dream  .

I sat on the floor and looked around the room.

Sa kama.

On the mattress that is now open.

With piles of money and documents scattered on the floor.

I smiled even though I had tears in my eyes.

“You’re really crazy, Miguel,” I whispered.

The next morning, I barely slept.

I read the letter over and over again.

Then I organized all the contents of the bag.

I carefully returned the documents.

But the mattress wouldn’t close anymore.

Instead, I put everything in one box.

I thought that when Michael got home, we would have to talk about everything.

Two days later, my phone rang.

Yes, Miguel.

“Anna, I’ll be home tonight,” he said.

This is your tree.

“Okay. I have something to prepare for dinner.”

I felt a strange sensation in my chest while I waited for him to come home.

That night, I heard a knock at the door.

Pumasok yes Miguel.

He looks tired.

She smiled when she saw me.

“Miss Kita.”

He came over to give me a hug.

But before he could do that, I told him:

“Miguel… We need to talk.”

Suddenly, he fell silent.

He seemed to know.

He sat down slowly on the sofa.

“Ana… Am I going with your son?”

Tumango ako.

He didn’t look at me.

I was simply stunned.

“I’m sorry if I lied to you.”

I approached.

The letter was placed on the table in front of him.

“Binasa ko.”

He slowly raised his gaze.

There was fear in his eyes.

“Galit ka ba?”

This is your tree.

“Hindi.”

Her eyes lit up.

“Sigurado ka?”

Tumango ako.

“But there is one thing that makes me angry.”

Suddenly, he became nervous.

“Year?”

I grabbed his hand.

“Why didn’t you include me in your dream from the beginning?”

Suddenly, her eyes filled with tears.

I couldn’t speak.

I hugged him tightly.

And for the first time in many months, I felt peace return to my heart.

A few weeks later, we traveled together to Cebu.

As the car approached a small town, I saw many children playing on the road.

We stopped in front of a new building.

It’s a small school.

At the top of the door it said:

“San Pedro Free Community School.”

I grabbed my mouth.

“Miguel…”

Ngumiti siya.

“Surprise.”

The children approached slowly.

The teachers also came from within.

Others applauded.

Others smiled.

“Thank you, Mr. Brown!” exclaimed one of the boys.

I felt my eyes fill with tears.

Not out of sadness.

But it’s because of the enormous fun.

Michael came over and grabbed my hand.

“Yes,” he said.

“This is my dream.”

He looked at the children.

“But I can’t do it alone.”

He looked at me.

“Would you like to help me run this school?”

I did not receive an immediate response.

I looked around.

To the smiling children.

In a small building filled with hope.

Then I turned to Michael.

In ngumiti.

“Syempre.”

That day the school opened for the first time.

Children who have never had the opportunity to study sit inside the classroom.

As I watched them, I realized something.

Minsan…

Secrets shouldn’t be used to cheat.

Sometimes, secrets stem from  dreams that want to become surprises.

And that night, as Miguel and I sat side by side in front of the small school, peace returned to us.

The strange smell that used to scare me…

The secret that almost destroyed our trust…

All of that led to something better.

It’s a new beginning.

It’s not just for us.

But for the  hundreds of Filipino children  who now have the opportunity to dream.

And when Michael took my hand, I said slowly:

“Now I understand why you hide everything.”

Ngumiti siya.

“Bakit?”

I looked at the school.

“And because once upon a time… “Life’s greatest surprises are the dreams we make for others.”

For the first time in a long time…

We lay down on the bed without fear.

There are no secrets.

And there’s no strange smell.

There is only silence.

In pag-ibig.
